Adult leaders use my.scouting.org for three jobs: renew registration, stay current on Youth Protection Training, and get trained for their position. Sign in with your own account. If you have never signed in, you need your member ID. Ask the Scoutmaster or committee chair, or use the member ID in a renewal email.
How to renew registration
Your membership lasts 12 months from the day you registered. It is not tied to the troop charter date. About 60 days before it expires, you get email and text from noreply@scouting.org.
- Sign in at my.scouting.org.
- Open the renewal. Use the link in the email or text, click the red notification icon at the top right, or go to Menu, then My Applications, then My Renewals, and choose Start Renewal.
- Review the positions on the screen. Keep the ones you still hold. Do not choose Opt Out unless you are leaving that position. Opting out by mistake has to be undone by the council.
- Sign and pay online. If the troop is paying for adult registrations, tell the committee chair instead of paying yourself. A Key 3 leader can renew you from the unit roster.
Youth Protection Training has to be current before the renewal will go through. If it is expired, do that first. Official steps: unit and membership renewal.
How to get YPT trained
Every registered adult needs Youth Protection Training. On the site the course is called Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT). That is the current YPT. It lasts one year.
- Sign in at my.scouting.org.
- Open My Training. Use the My Training button. Do not start from the training logo on the home page. Starting from My Training is what updates your record.
- Read the status and expiration date before you start. Some expiration emails go out even when the record is already current.
- If you have never taken it, or it has been expired for more than 7 days, take the full course. Plan on about 90 minutes.
- If it is still current, or it expired within the last 7 days, click Retake Course next to your status. That opens the shorter refresher, about 20 minutes. You have to pass the quiz on the first try. If you do not, the site sends you to the full course.
- If the course freezes, leave it and start it again from My Training. Chrome works best.
When you finish, check My Training again. The expiration date should move forward.
How to get leader trained
Trained means you finished the courses for the position you are registered in. Sign in, then open Menu, then My Dashboard, then My Training. The Requirements tab lists what that position still needs. The courses themselves are in the Training Center.
Each unit position has three online plans: Before the First Meeting, First 30 Days, and Position-Specific Training. Finish all three. If a plan is not already on your list, open the Scouts BSA catalog in the Training Center, find the plan for your position, and add it.
- Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters also take Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS). That course is in person, taught by the district or council. The online plans alone do not make a Scoutmaster trained. Ask the committee chair for the next IOLS date.
- The committee chair and committee members are trained when the three online plans are done. They do not take IOLS.
- Merit badge counselors take Merit Badge Counselor Orientation, and they still need current Youth Protection Training.
